Sewing the Trends LittleKidsGrowHi everyone!

Today I’m sharing a post with the lovely, Justine from Sew Country Chick. She’s doing this fantastic series called Sewing the Trends (Summer 2013) Fun, right?

I have to admit that I had no clue what was “in” this season. I was a complete fashion fanatic growing up. Now, not so much. A quick glance at InStyle magazine in the grocery store line is about as close as I get these days to staying up on the trends. That’s why I was excited to hang out with Justine for her series. I got to sink back into fashion mode for a quick minute and explore all the fun stuff that’s out this year.Sewing the Trends LittleKids Grow Pic 3

There were so many trends for this summer that after awhile my head started to spin, but the one that really stuck out for me was pattern mixing. I love the unexpected kick that varying patterns give a look.

I self-drafted two pieces. The first is a hi-lo top. It’s made of a lightweight “flowy” cotton. It has an open mandarin style collar and a single button closure in the back. I wanted the back to open up, so I paired it with a nice tank underneath. The second piece is a pair of shorts. This is a heavier cotton (maybe vintage?) that I picked up at an estate sale a few years ago. The front has a flat front waistband and box pleats with an elastic back. I can’t remember the last time I wore shorts, so drafting a pair was a lot of fun.Sewing the Trends LittleKidsGrow Back View

I LOVE those shorts Shannon. That print must be vintage! And the top is so cute too! I Thanks for participating!

  • Shirley says:

Love the outfit, especially the shorts! Visiting you from Sew Country Chick.

  • Amy mayen says:

Hi Shannon! I checked out your outfit here and at Justine’s place! I went in with bloglovin through email, and the app…got kicked out from your place and hers! I may have to start following you both via email again because I can’t be getting booted out of 2 of my favorite blogs ever!!

Anyways, I wanted to tell you I’m in love with your mandarin collar- what a fab twist on a great high low! I also love the length if your shorts. I want shorts that don’t hang all my junk out but still feel like I didn’t buy them in the grandma section, and I’ve just resigned to the fact that I’ll have to make the myself.

I’m impressed that you drafted it all yourself, and I love your mixed prints! Great job!

  • Simple Simon and Company says:

    Your fabric choices are AWESOME!!!!-liZ

  • Stacey Byrne says:

What a great score in that shorts fabric, Shannon! I love how the outfit turned out. I’m such a wimp when it comes to patterns. If I go for a patterned top I usually choose a solid bottom. I’m going to have to give this a try! Looks good on you, girl!

  • Jen says:

    Gorgeous! Such a great look.

  • Tammia says:

Finally getting caught up on your blog. LOVE the print mixing! And everything about that cotton fabric you used for your shorts is perfect. Great job!
